Just Another Day In 2017 America
It doesn’t really matter which innocent mother, father, son, daughter or child’s murder I am writing about. Sadly, by the time I publish this post, the police will have opened fire on another person of color who believed they could call the police for assistance or protection.
What I wish to offer is a solution to an ever growing horror story for Americans who mistakenly think the police are here to help them in a time of need.
After murderously gunning down a citizen who called for help, one would think that some remedial action would be standard police procedure. That is not the case. Ever!
Officers who shoot and kill citizens are temporarily suspended with pay.
That’s all. They get a paid vacation. The callousness of that action insults grieving families and stunned survivors.
The current procedure offers no deterrent to future murders by the gun toting killers. A more effective way to handle individuals who have stepped beyond the line of civil behavior would be to provide them counseling and to put the brakes on any additional shootings.
It goes like this;
Suspension without pay plus six weeks of psychiatric evaluation and re-education in an accredited facility. Upon release they would not be allowed to carry a firearm for a 2 year probationary period.
If that sounds draconian, you didn’t watch your loved one get killed because the cops were trigger happy. There has to be a standard code of responsible conduct for police with guns. A pregnant woman who called the police for help would still be alive if the responding police were taught to fear repercussions before opening fire.
Do I expect anything to change in racist America anytime soon? Not after seeing the number of racists who turned out to vote for Trump.
No wonder some white friends and neighbors were constantly listening to talk radio and watching fox news. Those hateful messages they eagerly welcomed into their hearts and minds were speaking to their fearful inner bigot and racist self.
I guess I knew it all along. I was so elated by connecting with the inner good in some people that I would forget they had been introduced as thieves, scoundrels, politicians, and murderers.
There is an easy way to know which white friends respect people of color… Just ask, “Does Trump disgust you, or not?”
(No pretty pictures in today’s post. This is not a happy story)
